MATRIX,THE (1999)
This outstanding film and specially the above scene
are deeply moving because of the uncanny parallel to our daily lives.
The choice Neo is offered would seem at first to be very unfair
in its consequences. One the one side is everything upon which he
has based his own life. On the other, the promise only of the truth.
"You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed
and believe whatever you want to believe" in essence if we were in
his place we would remain the same in a life consisting of habits. On
the other hand if we take the red pill we are only promised the truth
at the risk of upsetting our preconceived notions and ideas.
Some may argue that the blue pill is the way as Cypher said, "ignorance
is bliss". Fitting within the system is appealing as questioning
carries the danger of repercussions and the status quo always opposes
those who dare challenge it. Those in power, be it political, economical
or religious do not look with sympathy on the iconoclasts of history.
Morpheus says to Neo "You have to understand that many people are
not ready to be unplugged, and many of them are so injured, so hopelessly
dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it"
As in the movie we too live in a sort of a Matrix, and many yearn for
something real. There is a way to break out of
it all and be reborn into a whole new world- the real world, the world
as it truly is. By the same token there is an evil,
sinister power who is trying to keep everyone in the world lulled
to sleep, and who will go all-out to fight anyone who is trying to wake
others up and expose the lies. This evil powers uses humanities own weaknesses
and vices to enslave and deceive. This power is the one behind wars, greed,
disasters and is fiercely working to debase man from its intended place
in creation.
